We left Wake Forest, NC around 1 pm, went slow and made a lot of stops, and we were ready for dinner by the time we got to Asheville around 6 pm. Unfortunately, the BBQ joint we had listed for Asheville, 12 bones, is not open Sunday. So we did some quick Googling, and found a place called Luella’s.
Luella’s had good reviews online, so we stopped. Cute place decked out like Red, Hot and Blue at home.
Our waiter said there were some things not on the menu, one of which is the Luelephant sandwich: brisket, pulled pork, slaw, bacon, and sweet brisket sauce on Texas toast. Really delicious! The hush puppies were fantastic, but I’m afraid the red beans and rice were pretty mediocre.
Amy got the 3 meat sampler, with brisket, andouille sausage, and pulled pork. The pork was tender and juicy, but the sausage was awesome, especially with their house mustard sauce! The brisket was a little dry and chewy, but had a very pretty smoke ring. Amy’s sides included pimento cheese grits, which were good with a nice sweet heat, but could have used a pinch of salt.
Their sauces were all good, especially the local mustard sauce and the spicy sauce.
An interesting note about this place – every single person in the joint (including all the staff) were white, and many of the customers looked like hipsters. Maybe that’s just because Asheville is an artsy town, I don’t know.
